INTRODUCTION
From the mind of Sahr Ngaujah comes DRAGONFLIES, an epic sci-fi/fantasy adventure intended for international adult audiences.
DRAGONFLIES tells the story of an elite group of African fairies whose job has been to inspire artists for thousands of years. They do so by covertly engaging with the artist at a pivotal or detrimental moment in their life and then slinging their consciousness into a future time. There they find their style, their voice, and that elusive inspiration. The fairies then return the artist home to their original timeline. While that person does not remember their time-traveling adventures, they have an inexplicable drive, and a honed vision, that infuses them with the ability to create the renowned works that play significant roles in shaping the course of humanity... the roles that they eventually become known for. Some legends call these types of fairies The Muses. The future of their existence is threatened when an inner conflict sparks a war between them over the consciousness of humanity, and it is a fight to the death.
THE DRAGONFLIES LEGEND
There is an ancient decree called: “OHAB - Observe, Harness, Adapt, Balance”. This decree sparked an intractable debate resulting in the cataclysmic, antediluvian “Consciousness Wars”. At its epicenter is Wormwood the Chemist, one of the leaders of the Bennubian races. Facing imminent death, Wormwood created Ramses Desher, the first of the (Newb’s ) the Bennubian-human hybrids designed to navigate the delicate balance between the Bennubian species and human beings on Earth. (relation: Bennu bird, Vermillion, Firebird, Thunderbird, Phoenix). Desher, “The Green One”, forms “TheDRAGONFLIES Unit Operatives”, to engage and collaborate with humans directly, and maintain this balance. After eras of observing the magnitude of human avarice and their pernicious capacity for destruction, Ramses Desher decides that human collaboration is not possible. To protect life on Earth he moves to end human sovereignty and seize control of the planet. He selects his daughter, Artemisia, to lead a rebellion called The Red Dust Revolt, to achieve dominance over the malleable and dangerous volition of human beings. His son Lucien opposes the rebellion. Lucien believes that within human beings exists a creative energy that must be kept free…and that all life on Earth depends upon it. A covert war begins, jeopardizing the existence of the DRAGONFLIES, and endangering the survival of the human species… until one human being manifests latent abilities that change verything. Lucien, then has an epiphany native/bound to Wormwood and the ancient decree. Linking dormant human powers with the magic of the DRAGONFLIES, Lucien is empowered to defeat his father, end the Red Dust Revolt and initiate a new balance between the species. But it will be achieved at a great cost.
SETTING
The story and the battle will play out primarily in NYC during the year 2023. The setting will also cover medieval West-Africa, 19th Century France and Mali, 20th century Mexico and various cross-dimensional spaces among others. The opening story will also intersect the lives of Henri Toulouse Lautrec, Fela Kuti and Frida Khalo.
